Connection of Thomas b:1760 to father Oliver

Thomas SHEARMAN ( about 1705/10 probably Portsmouth, RI. or Dartmouth, Bristol, MA, or Tiverton, Newport Co. RI. on 3 June 1731 in Freetown, Bristol Co, MA, married Phebe LAWTON (about 1710/15) , dau of Daniel, Jr., and Ruth ( _____ ) LAWTON of Portsmouth and Freetown.  They lived in Freetown for some years, then possibly in Tiverton, where one Thomas SHEARMAN witnessed a Thomas Bourden will in 1740.  Some time after their first three children were born,  they moved to Mechanicsville (West Long Branch), Monmouth Co, NJ.

Their children included:

1. Oliver (23 Jan 1731/32 Freetown, MA - will of 1 Dec. 1795, proved 13 Jan 1801 Monmouth Co, NJ) married Abigail. (about 1740 - alive 1795), and lived in Shrewsbury twp, Monmouth Co after 1759. The four children were mentioned in his will; Thomas; James, David and Mary (wife of Levi VAN NOTE). (Carol Hough's line!)

2. Hannah (9 Apr 1733 Freetown, MA - ) no inf.

3. Mary (14 Aug 1736 Freetown, MA - ) no inf.

4. John (1738/1745 - _____). One John SHEARMAN may have married in Monmouth Co on 10 Apr 1800 to Ann GIFFORD, but it is not proved this was the correct John. Unless this was a second marriage for John, it is more likely in the next generation.

5. Thomas (9 Feb 1747 - 1 Oct 1829, buried Quaker cemetery in Manasquan, inventory, Monmouth Co, NJ) age 82 yrs: 7 months: 22 days, married in 1768 Mary VAN NOTE (13 June 1748 NJ - 14 Oct 1829, age 81:4:1, she was killed by a carriage while crossing Broadway Street in Long Branch City, NJ, buried Quaker Cemetery, Manasquan) Youngest of 13 children of Dutch parents of Mechanicsville, She was probably a daughter of William and Magdalene (BROUWER) (Van Nood) VANNOTE. The SHEARMAN family settled in Manasquan, NJ , but later was in law and grocery businesses in Long Branch.) There were 10 children recorded in bible records, but only seven are recalled as adults. The SHEARMAN children were: John ( 24 Jan 1770 ); Thomas (1) ( 5 Oct 1772 ); William ( 30 Mar 1775 ); Mary ( 17 Mar 1777 ); Samuel ( 6 Feb 1780 ); Phebe (1) ( 26 Feb 1782 ); Thomas (2) ( 21 Oct 1783 ); James ( 23 Mar 1786 ); Phebe (2) ( 13 Apr 1788 ); and Brittain ( 2 Jan 1791 - 29 June 1850 ).   (Thomas.doc)

Oliver SHEARMAN (23 Jan 1732/33 Freetown, MA - will of 1 Dec.. 1795, proved 13 Jan 1801 Monmouth Co.., NJ) md Abigail ??? (c 1735 - alive 1795), parents not yet determined.. Oliver probably moved to Monmouth Co.., NJ, with his parents before 1759.  On 8 Mar 1759, Oliver SHEARMAN bought land in Shrewsbury twp from Joseph POTTER.  Oliver probably lived on this land until his death.. It was sold 4 Oct.. 1809 to Cornelius VAN NOTE, who in turn with his wife Mary sold it to their son, William VAN NOTE.. William in turn with his wife Artless sold the land to William Bearmore on 13 Dec.. 1828..  There was an older SHEARMAN family in Monmouth Co.. by 1761 as Patience SHEARMAN md Silas COOK 25 May 1761..  It is known that the SHEARMAN family came from Freetown, MA..  It is not known when or where Oliver SHEARMAN md Abigail ??? but it seems not to have been in Freetown, MA, as no, marriage record has been found there.

Oliver SHEARMAN clearly lived on his Shrewsbury land as he was on tax lists there from 1780 through 1794.  Thomas, son of Oliver, was on the same list by 1786 through March 1789.  James SHEARMAN, probably son of Oliver, was on the lists by 1789.. Oliver made his will at Shrewsbury 1 Dec. 1795, his inventory was 2 July 1796, and his will proved 13 June 1801, according to the abstracts.  Oliver bequeathed to his wife Abigail; daughter Mary VANNONT (VANNOTE); sons Thomas and James; grandson Thomas, son of David; and grandson David, son of James.  Executor was neighbor Jeremiah NEWMAN.  Witnesses were John KINNEY, James HOLLOWAY, and Benjamin JACKSON.  Inventory was by James HOLLOWAY and Benjamin JACKSON.  (There was an intestate proceeding for James SHEARMAN in 1799, with Samuel HOLLOWAY appointed administrator on 23 Jan 1799 with bondsmen Benjamin JACKSON and Thomas LITTLE, Jr.  Inventory was 21 Jan 1799 by Benjamin JACKSON and James HOLLOWAY.  Children:  (Hank added for reference.)
