The above is tracing to my line which is Philip Sherman. There are other Shermans related to the above. See some below.

Referring to Roy Sherman’s notes: The Shermans recorded here are of English origin.

About 1634, 5 brothers and cousins came to Massachusetts. These 5 persons are the ancestors of most of the English Shermans in the United States.

These 5 Shermans are all 6 generations from the 1st English Shermans from whom records begin. They are Hon. Philip, Samuel, Capt John, Rev. John and Hon. Samuel. It seems impossible to trace family records farther than Thomas Sherman who died in 1492 be cause there are very few records, of people, of any kind, at that time.

Immigrant Sherman founders of families in the United States.

Rev. John Sherman B: 1613 Dedham, England. D: 1685. Many descendants.

Capt. John Sherman B: 1612 Dedham, England. D: 1690/1. Many descendants. Among them Roger Sherman, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Hon. Philip Shearman B: 1610 Dedham, England. He came 1st to Roxbury, Mass. & in 1638 went to Portsmouth, RI D: March 1687 in Portsmouth, RI. (Our Line).

Samuel Sherman B: 1601, Dedham, England. D: 1643. He came about 1636-7 & settled in Boston. Many descendants. Brother of Philip.

Hon. Samuel Sherman Bapt: July 12, 1618 in Dedham, England. D: April 5, 1700 in Fairfield, Conn. Came about 1632-3. Many descendants. Among them Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman.

William Sherman “The Pilgrim” Came about 1632 to Plymouth, Mass. & later settled in Marshfield, Mass. D: 1679. Some descendants. * F.D.S. 40.

As to the origin of the name, SHEARMAN, one who shears worsteds, fustian’s, etc.; an employment at Norwich, England by the designation of “Shermancraft”. Since names were seldom written, they were spelled as the writer saw fit to produce the desired sound.

So one finds in the early records of England: Shearman, Sherman, Sharman, Shereman & Shurman. It would seem that the name comes from the early clothiers, weavers and workers with cloth.

Rev. John Sherman and his brother Samual spelled their name “SHERMAN.” The others spelled it “SHEARMAN.”
